The BT Phone Book has arrived… sort of

The MET Office had issued a severe weather warning for the east of England this Sunday, but somehow that didn't discourage the deliverer of BT Phone Books in Norwich from dropping telephone directories on doorsteps throughout the city.

I was somewhat surprised to get a directory myself, as I had opted out of receiving them via saynotophonebooks.com (a website I wrote about on this blog a while ago). But what surprised me more was that the 840 pages where wet-through – despite being wrapped in plastic. It only needed adding a bit of glue to turn it into papier-mâché.

Delivering these books door-to-door is bad enough, but wasting paper in this way is simply stupid. How many of these soaked books will have been delivered only to be thrown out straightaway?

The only good thing about getting the book is that it gives me another opportunity to mention that it is possible to opt out of receiving these books (information you won't find in the directory itself!). All you need to do to stop this waste is phone BT Customer Services on (free phone) 0800 800 150.

Other directories you might want to opt out of are the Yellow Pages (free phone 0800 671 444) and the Thomson Local (01252 555 555 or info@thomsonlocal.com).
